Our Roots
A personal note from our founder
There’s a moment that shaped everything about this firm, and I think about it often.
For years, I worked inside other CPA practices. From the outside, everything looked fine. The returns got filed, the deadlines got met, and the office kept moving. But something always sat uneasy with me. I watched good people, hardworking families and faithful business owners, get treated like numbers on a page. Get them in the door, push the return out, move on to the next one. There was rarely time to look up from the paperwork and actually see the person sitting across the desk. No one asked about their dreams, their struggles, or the calling that got them out of bed in the morning.
I knew, deep down, that there had to be a better way.
The Fifteen Minutes That Changed Everything
The turning point came quietly. Every now and then, I would steal a few extra minutes with a client. Not to rush through forms, but to genuinely listen. I would ask about their work, their family, and what they were really trying to build. And almost every time, something would surface. A missed deduction. A smarter way to structure their giving. A strategy no one had ever taken the time to explain to them.
In those moments, I could often save people thousands of dollars, year over year.
But here is what struck me most. Those fifteen minutes were never really about the numbers at all. They were about the person. Their family around the dinner table. The business they had poured their life into. The quiet calling they carried but rarely got to talk about with anyone who understood. The numbers were just the doorway. The relationship was the real work.
A Calling, Not Just a Career
So I started Salt of the Earth CPA.
I did not start it to build the biggest firm in town or to file the most returns in a single season. I started it because I felt genuinely called to bring this kind of careful, prayerful stewardship to the people I care about most. This is not just my profession. It is part of how I live out my faith every single day, and I believe God placed this conviction on my heart for a reason I could not ignore.
I wanted to slow down on purpose. I wanted to build a place where clients are known by name, where their goals matter, and where good stewardship is treated as the sacred responsibility it truly is.
When Stewardship Multiplies
Then something remarkable started happening, and it still moves me every time I see it.
When I helped Christians who run their own ministries save thousands of dollars, that money never just disappeared into a bank account or got spent on something forgettable. It poured right back out into the ministry world. It fed the hungry. It supported missionaries. It funded outreach programs and kept the lights on for ministries doing quiet, faithful work in their communities.
I was watching wise stewardship multiply into real Kingdom impact. A few thousand dollars saved on a tax return became meals for families, shelter for the hurting, and the Gospel carried into places I will never personally visit. That is when I understood the true weight of this work. Every dollar I help a client keep is a dollar that can be sent toward something eternal.
Who We Serve Today
Today, I have the privilege of walking alongside ministries, individuals, and Christian business owners across our community and beyond.
My mission is simply and deeply personal. I want to keep more money in your pockets so it can flow toward the purposes that matter most to you. Whether that is providing for your family, growing your business with integrity, or fueling the ministry God has placed on your heart, I am here to help you steward it well.
You are not a number here. You are a person with a story, a calling, and a future worth investing in. I would be honored to learn yours and walk this road alongside you.
Written with gratitude,
Matthew Hale
